Irvin S. Ehrlich
RABBI IRVIN S. EHRLICH has been Temple Beit Torah's spiritual leader since the Temple
was founded in 1992.
Rabbi Ehrlich entered the US Air Force as a Jewish Chaplain in April 1974, and was
assigned to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. While at Ramstein, he provided Jewish ministry
to Air Force and Army personnel who were stationed in Germany, Holland, Turkey,
Greece, Italy, and Spain. Rabbi Ehrlich first came to Colorado Springs in 1977 as
the Jewish Chaplain, US Air Force Academy. He left in 1980 and in 1989 he returned
to the Air Force Academy.
He grew up in Bainbridge, Georgia, and graduated from Bainbridge High School in
1959. He attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia, receiving an
Associate of Arts Degree in 1962. After graduating from the University of Georgia
in Athens with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1964, Rabbi Ehrlich studied at the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. He earned a Bachelor of
Hebrew Letters in 1968 and a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters in 1970. His Master's
thesis was entitled "Teaching Jewish Teachers to Teach." He was ordained in June
of 1970.
In 1992, he became the rabbinical consultant to Temple Beit Torah; and in March
of 1994 he was elected as TBT's first rabbi. In March of 1995, he was awarded an
honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion. He married Vivian Mitzman of Angola, Indiana in 1967. They have three
children and six grandchildren.
